X Games Tignes 2013 Slopestyle depart

Sun after 50 hours of snow

The sun finally came through late, Tuesday morning after it had been snowing for more than 50 hours – since Saturday evening!
The day started out snowing, with poor visibility, and the mountains and the sky was one big whiteout.

Tignes Val Claret from Lollike.dk
Around 10.30-ish the sky suddenly cleared up, and the day very quickly turned into a fantastic bluebird 😀

The temperature arose throughout the first part of the day and ended around 10°C in the mid afternoon, before the sky slowly re-closed with a thin high-flying milky blur…

IMG_20130319_105037

The snow was nice and cold – though, due to the windy conditions of the snowstorm, not as fluffy as one could have wished for.
Some places the new snow cracked and slid in plates, and the difference in snow density between the old and new snow was very evident!!

My day started out watching and watching the mountain, awaiting the announced clear up – the weather really wasn’t inviting for doing anything on the mountain…
After a long breakfast with the e-newspaper 🙂 I went down to Skimium Precision ski shop in Val Claret, where I borrowed some backcountry skis. I chose to try out their Zag ski – a French ski mark I’m not familiar with.

I only reached a few hours of skiing the fresh and deep powder under the royal-blue and sunny sky, before closed back in to a sad flat light…
Of course I brought out the GoPro cameras, and a few self-portrayed shots were quite nice 😉

See the pics below 😀
Video will come later – in the mean time you can also enjoy the video from January 2013 – also from Tignes / Val d’Isère 😉

First days in Tignes

Left from Copenhagen on a 836 DKK ticket with Norwegian – incl. 2 paid bags and ski equipment at 8.10, to fly over a frozen Europe into Grenoble, on time, 2 hours later!
The newly rebuild airport of Grenoble swarmed with chartered airplains, and the baggage hall teemed with tourists in baggage anarchy and holiday atmosphere 🙂

View of the Alps from the airplane

Outside the airport the tourist buses were nicely lined up and it was quick and easy to find the bus going to Tignes. The coach was modern, and the approximately 3½ hours up to Tignes didn’t seem long, among others due to the few stops in Moutiers, Aime and Bourg Saint Maurice for the tourists heading for Les 3 Vallées, Paradis Ski, La Rosiere and Val d’Isère – in all 8 of Europe’s largest ski resorts seperated by only a few hours drive!

Bus trip from Grenoble airport to Tignes

The sun was out and the valley was nice and warm – clearly the spring is not far away now 🙂
Tignes offered bluebird and a nice few degrees cold – a perfect arrival day!!

In the evening the sky closed in and the snow softly started falling.
Throughout the night and the entire Sunday everything has been white in white! Though it has been snowing all night and day, I didn’t find it accumulated as much as I had expected…
Sunday evening the snowh has finally started piling up, and it could look like the the weather forecast might be right about the expectations for the coming night and days 😀

So far we’re looking at 55 cm in 2550 m altitude and up to 1 (ONE) meter!! between 3000 m and 3500 m – before we get BLUEBIRD on Tuesday afternoon 😆

After that, we’re expecting shifting between sun and snow during the X Games Tignes 2013 days, 20-22 March, with mainly sunny days – stay tuned for more in the days to come!!

Anna Filippa in Tignes 2013

Danish skier, Anna Filippa Frydensbjerg Lollike (10), had a ton of fun i Tignes / Val d’Isère in early 2013 🙂

First snow in Tignes!

Yesterday morning the Tignards woke up to a delightfull view, as the first snow has fallen 😀
Check out the panorama shoot from the webcam on the Grande Motte glacier – the peaks of Val d’Isère, Les Arcs and La Plagne are to be spottet with snow as well – and of course Mont Blanc in the far North 😉

Winter X Games Tignes 2012 Superpipe finale

[en]The young American freeskier Torin Yater-Wallace from Aspen, Colorado, won this years biggest European freestyle contest, the Winter X Games Superpipe in Tignes, France in March 2012!

He completed the technical difficult runs with 5 giant tricks, which was without comparison to any of his competitors, and scored a massive 95 points in his last and 3rd run – almost 3 ½ points more than Thomas Krief, who scored 91,66 points in his 2nd run, which secured him well earned 2nd place.

Third place went to this year’s winner of the even larger sister contest, the Winter X Games Aspen, in January 2012, David Wise scoring 90,33 points.
Fourth place was taken by Canadian Justin Dorey with 90 points.[/en]

[en]In his first run, Torin Yater-Wallace, scored 93 point with a super nice run.
Thomas Krief rose to the challenge and scored 98,66 points, enough to put him into 2nd place, which definitely boosted his self confidence for the 2nd run!
Justin Dorey and David Wise both threw some nice and well defined runs, but couldn’t change anything in the top placings. Local Xavier Bertoni, from Tignes, skied into a preliminary 3rd place with 81 points.[/en]

right-side dobbelt-cork-1260
right-side flatspin 900 japan
right-side 900 tail-grab
left-side 1080 tail-grab
right-side switch flatspin 900 japan

[en]The last 3 freeskiers, Gus Kenworthy, Noah Bowman og Matt Margetts all delivered some nice runs, though didn’t have a chance against the new generation.

Torin Yater-Wallace stomped his 2nd run and Thomas krief could suddenly smell blood – or at least the podium 🙂
He’d delivered a super 1st run and with the 31,500 spectators, fans, the coach and team members – among others, his friend Kevin Rolland (4 times winner of X Games Superpipe, 2 times winner of Dew Tour 2011 and World Champion 2009 – but injured this year), who all shouted and cheered, he went all-in, and performed his 5 massive tricks with great style and huge air times, and scored 91,66 points, and had thereby secured himself a place on the podium!

David Wise, Justin Dorey and Noah Bowman all delivered some nice runs with big air times and self confident tricks, and scored respectively 90,33 – 90 and 85 points.

Xavier Bertoni, Gus Kenworthy og Matt Margetts all skied some relatively shitty runs.

Prior to the 3rd and last run it was clear that the 8 freeskiers could be divided into 2 categories, of whom only one effectively still had a chance of reaching the podium.
The game of not ending 4th would be tough, as all 4 freeskiers was worthy to winning the 3 medals!

Justin Dorey was first of the last four freeskiers between who the battle should stand between, but he couldn’t improve his 2nd run, and thereby it was clear that the podium placings should distributed between the last 3 freeskiers – it was now only the colors of their medals which could change!!

Torin Yater-Wallace went all-in in his 3rd run, and with a nice margin to the two others, he threw this year’s wildest and highest air times, while he self confidently threw his 5 huge and neck breaking tricks all the way down the 7 meters high halfpipe:

right-side dobbelt-cork-1260
right-side flatspin 900 japan
right-side 900 tailgrab
left-side 1080 tailgrab
right-side switch flatspin 900 japan

He improved his 1st run and scored massive 95 points!![/en]

[en]Thomas Krief could stand the pressure and stomped his 3rd run, and remained on an inspiring and well deserved 2nd place!

Winter X Games 2012 – A.J. på bjerget
